I feel like this place is the red-headed stepchild of Kobe a few miles down US-19. It doesn't have the ambiance or the polish, but it's still a solid hibachi restaurant. The food is good, the price is right, I give it four stars!

We walked in the front door & were told someone would be with us soon. 7;15 on a Saturday evening, the 'Sushi Bar' had 1 couple at a table, no one at the bar. When someone did ask if they could help, we were told to just sit anywhere. We choose a booth w/ a window to the pond. The rice paper had been torn out of the screen, the view obstructed by the dirty, dirty, dirty, window. It was clear (no pun intended) that it had been quite some time since there had been any pride in this restaurant either the owner or the staff. When our waitress FINALLY showed up, she asked if were were ready to order? Not exactly, a menu would be nice helpful. She did return within about 3 minutes W/ our HOT (not) Green tea. I give this restaurant credit for the menu. It's double sided laminated menu. Each item available has a little box. You are given a marker. Brilliant. It would have been nice if we had been given markers for each person. I gave up possession of the marker & that was it, I didn't see it again. (Can you tell we do NOT share well?). We ordered: HOT green tea, HOT miso soup. Shrimp tempura, 3 Sushi rolls, Edamame. A nice start, & we could order more if we wanted more. The HOT green tea was anything but hot, and anything but green. We mentioned this to the waitress, she did say 'sorry, I didn't know'. (OK, I didn't expect you to stick your finger in my tea, just please bring HOT tea). She took that pot of cold tea away & returned w/ one that had tea that was equally cool. **I give up, so I'll drink cold black tea instead of hot green tea.** (She NEVER came back to see if the 2nd pot of tea was better.) The 1st item to be dropped at the table was the Tempura. I thought this kinda strange as I would really have liked to have some hot soup. She wasn't there long enough for me to ask, as I said she dropped and ran. Tempura was quite good, so I was hopeful that it was just the wait staff that sucked in this place. The next to come was the Edamame. Hot as we requested, but lacking seasoning. I asked for iced tea as the HOT tea was anything but. Don't think she understood as I got the Deer in the headlights look. I got my ice tea, hubby ordered a beer. We finished our tempura & edamame. Tried to enjoy the pond outside our window. Decided I really should not do that as I was thinking ... if the windows are this dirty????? Decided to check out the Benihana room. As I checked it out, I noticed that an entire section was not being used. Lights out, depressing and sad. The lit area had 4 tables. Only 2 had patrons. The 1 table w/ 6 (4 at one end, a couple at the other) all looked very bored and unimpressed. They were sitting with no action at the grill. What were they waiting for? More patrons? Who knows, didn't ask? Got back to my seat hoping that something had come out of the kitchen only to find a bored hubby staring into space. About this time, a tiny Japanese man walked by. On his 3rd trip by our table, hubby did get his attention. We asked if he was Hiro? (Yes) Where in Japan did he come from? (Okinawa) Told him we had lived in Japan for 10 years. (Oh) During this conversation, I didn't see any spark of hope, passion or enjoyment from this man. He impressed me as broken and defeated. When we told him that we had had 2 pots of COLD HOT tea, his suggestion was to tell the waitress. WTH - As the owner shouldn't he address this? Now hubby checked out the back room. Still waiting for our food. Aahh, finally, our sushi rolls. We had not ordered complicated rolls. California roll, Spider roll, and Dragon roll. (And still no soup). The flavor of the rolls was surprisingly good. The size surprisingly small. NOW the soup arrives. Lukewarm at best, and again, missing seasoning. I thought I was drinking warm seaweed water. I did finally find A piece of tofu in my soup, no kidding, it could not have measured more than 1/8". I felt like WHERE'S THE TOFU? Horrible. We didn't discuss ordering more, just give us our check so we can get out of here!!!!! I am glad that we had a Groupon coupon. That made the final bill sort of acceptable. We even got charged for the not so hot green tea even we sent it back. WTF? We rationalized it that we got a lot of food (not all good), but a lot of food for what we paid. We will not go back again. The place needs a good cleaning, if the windows are this dirty, you stick to the floor, and the bathroom is dirty and smells, what is going on in the kitchen. I do believe the owner needs to relook the entire place. The wait staff needs to come out of their comas and give a crap about what they are doing. I counted 5 wait staff and the 'hostess' With this amount of staff, and as few patrons as were there, our service should have been spot on even if the food was not. My advice to the owner??? Call Gordon Ramsay of Kitchen Nightmares. As I see it, that would be the only chance to get some life back into this place.

I rate this place as middle of the road, or just ok. The food was ok, the atmosphere was ok, and the decor was ok. I might put this on my list of places to get take-out from or to have week night dinner, but I would not rate this as a date night location. Admittedly if you read my other posts you'll understand that I have expectations for anyone who is going to sell me something my wife or I could prepare ourselves. I ordered the chicken hibachi dinner. The noodles were ok, they didn't crisp like I expect from a flat top grill, the chicken was eatable but not overly flavorful. The meal comes with a basic side salad which it needs to balance out the carb-load and a basic beef stock soup that I don't believe is made from scratch. Here is where I could have removed a star. The rice... This restaurant is using a frozen vegetable mix in their fried rice. I know this because I hate lima beans and there were several limas and large hunks of green beans in the rice. I actually don't care if this is the house standard, but for the sake of the diner these details matter, disclose, disclose, disclose. There is a way to note on the menu that previously frozen vegetables are used in the fried rice. Try this: Fried Rice with a medley of fresh frozen vegetables. All that to say it's not a buyer beware location, but it won't wow you.

Pasta in miso soup (instead of traditional tofu) was just strange! We were put at a hibachi table alone (everyone else was seated together at another table) and we had to wait a long time for our chef, who was mediocre in his presentation (probably from lack of an audience), and the rice and noodles were so-so. The scallops and shrimp I had, however, were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The floors were "sticky" and I felt the place generally unclean. We won't be back, not when there are so many better places in the area. Sorry Hiros you lost two customers anyway.

Hiros used to be good. However now there is no ambiance. The food is lackluster and why is there a hookah at a Japanese steakhouse? Yes I said hookah. They used to offer fresh salmon for the hibachi but now it's just frozen grayish "salmon". It may have been just the cook I had that night but who presses salmon on the grill like a $2 burger? Cooking sacrilege! Service was great but it could've been because there was no one else there for food. I will not be going back, this once yummy restaurant needs a major overhaul. The wife and I even thought about contacting "Restaurant Impossible" tv show for them because this is a place we used to love.

The sushi, service, and prices are always great here. Very nice quiet, calm atmosphere. A gem in Tarpon Springs.

I was not too impressed when eating at Hiro's Tokyo this weekend. I love hibachi and was very disappointed. When we walked in it was very dark and cold. Not too welcoming. We walked through a HUGE cloud of smoke getting to our table. It seemed to be that the cooks were burning the food and creating tons of smoke. I am surprised the smoke alarms didn't go off. After settling in with our table the cook started cooking, he had an entire bowl of salt & pepper mix that he continually poured on our food. I think we literally had an entire bottle of salt and pepper. When he served the food and I tasted it I had to spit it right out. It was awful. Tasted like I was just eating salt. I had ordered the veggie plate and my husband chicken. I kept looking for his chicken since that was the last item cooked and discovered it had been sitting underneath the cart. it was out in the open and had been for about 20 minutes while the cook was cooking the other food. It looked disgusting under there. Trash, grease and everything else. Nothing was covered! The butter looked like it had old food in it. I was NOT impressed with this place and will not be back!

If you are interested in mediocre sushi and mediocre service this is your place. The food came out at 5 different times for 5 different plates. This included other tables being served in between. The food was not as ordered. Overall mediocre experience at best.

Great ambiance if you sit at the tables. Food is amazing. Used a Groupon saved half off our meal. Will be back and will be looking out for other deals. We ordered the chicken tempura, shrimp teriyaki box with sushi and potstickers and Beef Negamaki. Everything was delicious and we were unable to finish it all.

Should have brought a pillow, could have taken a nap when waiting for the chef and our second drink. The addition of Italian pasta to the Japanese dishes is an interesting touch. It's the first Hibachi grill I've been to where they didn't have chopsticks along with the silverware. Finally, the place needs cleaning. The floor felt sticky under our chairs and the windows look like they need a good washing.

Have been here 2 times now and both times the service was poor. The first time I placed an order for carry out I waited an hour, went there and they hadn't even put the order in. This time I waited an hour and a half. They told me 45 minutes, I waited an hour and another 30 minutes in the restaurant. Great food but slow service.

My coworker told me to try this place & it was fantastic. I'm a vegetarian & my boyfriend a meat eater. We just moved down from Philadelphia & this will now be our sushi place. My veggie rolls were great & the carnivore was actually full after his 2 rolls & appetizer. Again this place is great. I can't wait to go back & try the hibachi next.

This place has absolutely gone so downhill. It has obviously changed ownership from original owners. Almost positive that it is not Japanese owned anymore, just can't be. The reason on why I think this. There is a bunch of American college kids who don't give a damn about the place or customers who work there. It used to be my go to sushi place back In The day. They had the best well presented decent sized sushi, so tasty, but the last times I've been there it's been below average. Sushi is half the size . The very last and final time I ate there the rice for the sushi seemed like it needed more cooking, hard. On one of my better days, sushi has been just ok, but definitely no where near on the same hemisphere of where it used to be. This place also has the most horrible service! The only reason I gave it a second and last chance is because my friend said it was good the last time she was there, but that was also a long time ago . I warned her it wasn't the same and she just said , c'mon lets just give it one last chance because she was starving. When we got there we literally stood by the front desk waiting for someone to sit us as they just kept passing and passing . They saw us, but nothing. I looked at my friend and gave her the look. The I told u so look! Haha, so ridiculous it was humorous. Then after letting my friend suffer enough, I gave a Hello with a little hand wave and asked if anyone was going to sit us or do we just sit ourselves. The girl there was like , umm yeah umm sure, Hold on. The 2 front booths to the left were both dirty, but just needed to be wiped down, there were no plates, Just glasses and water splashes and she acted like my guest and I were a bother because we asked to be sat in one of them. The place wasn't even busy! She told us just a minute while I get it cleaned and she didn't even come back! Oh my god, we don't want to burden u all to clean a table or two so real live customers can come in, eat and bring u business. Haha, really?! U all need to hire real people to work for u, Not these younger college kids that don't give a crap about your business. Seriously , I'm never coming back again.

Stopped in after work, sushi chef was friendly and the selection was nice. Grabbed some edamame, 2 rolls and a hand role. Everything was delicious.

let me start by saying i have been to other hiro's and have had great service. this was my first visit to the tarpon location and I must say the chef and food and cost were excellent BUT the service was horrid my table waited 20+ mins just to get our drink order in and then another 20 mins for the server to take our food order the manager said the hostess wasn't communicating with the staff and was new I am sorry that is unacceptable especially on a day like valentines day to use a new hostess or server I have serious reservations on EVER returning to this location

I have only based this rating/review on one visit there. Frankly, the only reason we went there was because of a Groupon sort of thing they had going. We were searching for a better sushi place nearby, and it turned out pretty well. We were in there on a Thursday evening, somewhat late for the area (8:30...ok, so there are a lot of old folks around here!). It looks like they have done some freshen ups, and it looked ok. The sushi side of the place was somewhat deserted., and we sat at a table. The waitress was anything but Asian...middle aged whitebread. She was nice enough, and medium attentive (given it was deserted, she did seem absent more than I expected). But from the ika salad on through the salmon sashimi and arriving at the dragon and other rolls, the food was quite good. Despite it being deserted, it was surprisingly loud, just from the wait-staff banter behind the counter, and etc. I worry that it could be very loud on a busy night. We definitely will be going back, so I will amend this review if I discover that I can't hear myself ordering!

We are regulars at Hiro's we go for the sushi mostly but have a great time at the hibachi tables too, always good food and friendly service. We've tried other sushi bars but always come back to Hiro's

I've been eating at Hiro's off and on for the last 10 years. I have met Hiro and had the pleasure of talking with him on several occasions over the years. The food and sushi has always been fresh and the service has been excellent over the years. I have been to his restaurant in Georgia many years ago before I came to Tarpon Springs and was pleasantly surprised to find that the place here in Florida was even better than the one in Georgia. It may have had something to do with the fact that Hiro was often in the Tarpon Springs store. The people have always been friendly and they serve amazing food and have top quality cooks. Love the place.. Will miss it when I move to Philly soon..

I'd like to give these guys a good review because the food is decent. In fact we do order to go once in a while because it is near our house. But if you are looking for a pleasant dining in experience avoid this place... Regardless of how few customers they have the service is incredibly slow. The last time we were there it took nearly an hour just to get drinks after our initial order was taking... All total we were there three hours... trust me, the food which again is decent, is certainly not worth a three hour wait. :(

I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIRO'S IN TARPON SPRINGS. THE FOOD IS NOT GOOD, AND THE SERVICE IS POOR. Our waitress, who undoubtedly must have been new, was scattered. Our drinks took an unusually long time to arrive. The sushi appetizer we ordered was not the one we got. When we tried to waive our waitress down, she kept ducking in and out of sight. So we called to the waitress attending the table next to ours and let her know our appetizer was wrong, and she had the gall to question us about having ordered incorrectly. There was a lot of smoke accumulated inside Hiro's because they don't have the hoods above the table like Benihana. We had an emergency and had to leave before our chef had even arrived at the table to start cooking the meal. I asked for the check and could not believe they were charging me for the entire meal!!! I tried to complain to our waitress, but she just kept scurrying around and didn't even notice the incorrect bill. I finally got a manager's attention (a blond woman whose name I didn't get), and told her that we shouldn't be charged for a meal we didn't have. They grudgingly removed the items we never got to eat. Our waitress, possibly feeling a little guilty, packed up the other appetizer we had ordered (which was correct!) in a to-go box, and we ate that in the car. It was pretty much scallions rolled inside Steak-Ums and doused with teriyaki sauce. Perhaps we've been spoiled by our frequent (and excellent) dining experiences at Benihana. We are new to the Tampa Bay area and are still feeling out restaurants. But after having attempted to dine at Hiro's, we will now happily drive all the way to Orlando if we want teppanyaki. Hiro's wasn't that busy, so there was really no excuse for the poor service. We didn't even get an apology. NO DINING EXPERIENCE IS WORTH THE AGGRAVATION--I DO NOT RECOMMEND DINING AT HIRO'S IN TARPON SPRINGS.
